What Is Dry Fire Training? Benefits & How to Get Started

For firearms enthusiasts, competition shooters, law enforcement officers, and self-defense practitioners in general, consistent training is key to developing and maintaining shooting skills. One of the most effective yet often overlooked training methods is dry fire training. But what exactly is dry fire training, and why should you incorporate it into your practice routine?

Understanding Dry Fire Training

Dry fire training refers to practicing firearm manipulation and shooting techniques without using live ammunition. Instead, shooters use an unloaded firearm, training aids like SureStrike™ laser cartridges with electronic targets (LaserPET™ II or iMTTS) to refine their skills in a controlled environment. This method allows users to enhance their accuracy, speed, and muscle memory without the cost and logistical challenges of live-fire training at a shooting range.

Benefits of Dry Fire Training

  1. Cost-Effective Training – Ammunition is just expensive, making frequent live-fire practice expensive. Dry fire training eliminates the cost of ammo and range fees while still allowing shooters to improve their technique.

  2. Convenience – Not everyone has access to a range nearby or the time to visit one regularly. Dry fire training can be done at home safely with the right precautions.

  3. Skill Development & Muscle Memory – Repetition is key to building muscle memory. Practicing draw speed, trigger control, sight alignment, and follow-through can significantly enhance real-world performance.

  4. Immediate Feedback with Technology – With tools like the SureStrike™ laser cartridge, LaserPET™II or iMTTS interactive targets, shooters can receive instant feedback on their performance, making dry fire training even more effective, and fun!

  5. Safe Environment to Correct Bad Habits – Flinching, improper grip, and poor trigger control can be identified and corrected without the distraction of recoil or the anticipation of a loud gunshot (or people around).

  6. Time Savings - Going to the range requires you being available when the range is open. Saving the time driving to the range, and back, not to mention the packing up all of your gear.. huge time savings! Plus, you can dry fire in your jammies, in the comfort of your own home. Winning!

Dry Fire Training Tools

While it is perfectly acceptable to use your empty firearm and go through the motions to work on your shooting skills, advancements in training tools have made the dry fire experience much more engaging and productive.

  • Laser Ammo’s SureStrike™ laser allows shooters to use a laser cartridge that emits a laser pulse when the trigger is pulled, providing instant visual feedback.

  • Electronic Targets like the LaserPET™II or iMTTS offer an interactive experience, with audible and visual confirmation of your shots. Set up the targets around your house to simulate room clearing drills and reaction-based shooting scenarios.

  • The Smokeless Range® Shooting Simulator takes dry fire training to another level, allowing users to engage in countless realistic and fun training exercises in your home, range or office.

The Four Fundamental Rules of Firearm Safety

  1. Treat All Guns as Though They are Loaded – Even if you believe a firearm is unloaded, always handle it with the same level of caution as if it were loaded. Always visually and physically check before assuming a gun is safe.

  2. Always Point the Muzzle in a Safe Direction – Never aim a firearm at anything you do not intend to shoot. Even when unloading or handling a firearm, ensure it is always pointed in a safe direction

  3. Keep Your Finger Off the Trigger Until You are Ready to ShootNever place your finger on the trigger until you have your target in sight and are prepared to fire.

  4. Know Your Target and What’s Beyond ItAlways identify your target and consider what lies beyond it. Bullets can travel significant distances and may cause unintended damage or injury if they miss or ricochet off surfaces

Getting Started with Dry Fire Training

  1. Safety FirstAlways confirm your firearm is unloaded before starting any dry fire practice. Remove all live ammunition from the training area. Revisit the Universal Safety Rules above

  2. Set Up a Safe Training Space – Choose an area with a safe backdrop and ensure there are no distractions.

  3. Use Training AidsUtilize laser training cartridges and interactive targets to track progress in a shooting journal and keep training engaging.

  4. Focus on FundamentalsWork on sight alignment, trigger control, and smooth draw techniques to build a solid foundation. You don't have to practice them all at the same time. Focus on one thing you plan on working through at a time

  5. Practice RegularlyEven 10–15 minutes of daily dry fire training can lead to significant improvements in shooting performance.

Dry fire training is an invaluable tool for shooters of all experience levels. It provides a cost-effective, convenient, and highly effective way to develop and maintain essential shooting skills. With the right tools, such as Laser Ammo’s SureStrike and interactive training systems, you can take your dry fire training to the next level and build confidence in your shooting abilities.
